Emma Thompson is a British actress, screenwriter, activist, author, and comedian. Considered one of the UK's most critically-acclaimed actresses, she is well-known for portraying enigmatic and motherly characters with a sense of wit, often in dramas and literary adaptations. She is also the recipient of several accolades, including two Academy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, three BAFTA Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards.

Thompson was born in Paddington, London, United Kingdom. She was brought up with a family of actors and writers, learning about theatre and literary arts from them, and spent much of her childhood in Scotland. As a child she had a love of literature and language, and learned to speak English, French, and Latin.
Her first foray into television was in 1982, in the ITV comedy series There's Nothing To Worry About!, also starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. The inherent success had her casted for several more television miniseries, most notably in 1987 with Fortunes of War and Tutti Frutti.
Since 1989, she has appeared in a staggering 80 separate films and television series, acting alongside such big names as Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Meryl Streep, and Tommy Lee Jones.
